J G Graves Woodland Discovery Centre at Ecclesall Woods

J G Graves Woodland Discovery Centre is located in the heart of Sheffield’s largest ancient woodland, Ecclesall Woods, and is a bespoke indoor and outdoor facility, perfect for hosting a spectrum of events or for simply enjoying a walk in the woods!

Our woodland community includes regular health walk and wood run groups, woodland activity clubs for youngsters and the Woodland Coffee Stop for amazing coffee, toasties and homemade cakes, all served with a smile. Seasonal events, walks, talks and family activities take place here throughout the year – from Christmas pop up shops to a Feast in the Forest! – pick up woodland walks and run routes and seasonal family activity sheets to help make the most of your time exploring your serene surroundings.

The centre’s bespoke buildings and unique spaces are made of harmonious wooden materials chosen to blend beautifully with the natural landscape and are available to hire at for weddings and parties, business meetings, conferencing and away days. We feature regular wellbeing and lifestyle activities, from Grow Theatre to yoga groups, and our school educational sessions are delivered in partnership with Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust who also deliver an array of forest-led fun activities through the holidays. Learning and community groups can also work together with our rangers to tailor-make their woodland adventures.

We host the SWEEP woodland volunteer group supporting the work of our woodland rangers and a talented and dedicated craft volunteer team that assist our tutors and our heritage craft course programme.

Our tenants include Ecclesall Logs, Handspring Design, Hector & Cedric and the Sheffield Beekeepers Association – call in to get your hands on some glorious local honey homemade by the bees right here at the woods!

Friends of Ecclesall Woods (FEW) was founded in 1993 with an aim to investigate and protect our beautiful woods and to pass on this knowledge to everyone. You can join and support them for just £10 a year.

Did you know that Ecclesall Woods is South Yorkshire’s largest and most ancient woodland and the ‘jewel in the crown’ of the city’s woodland estate.

A DAY OF LEARNING IN AN IDYLLIC SETTING

Set in a beautiful ancient woodland, our traditional skills and heritage craft courses are inspired by nature and enthused by a city of Sheffield-made makers and artisans. Our friendly craftspeople and craft team volunteers will guide you with their knowledge of age-old methods and natural materials to learn and master those hands-on, practical and creative skills you’ve always dreamed of. Scheduled with the seasons in mind and when locally resourced materials are plentiful, courses take place at our beautifully-crafted workshop area and some may venture into the wider woods. Let nature inspire your creativity – our greenwood courses are led by our very own master craftsman Dave Jackson with Rachel, Kay and Pete all at hand to help sharpen existing skills, indulge your senses and visualise your ideas.
