Prehistoric Rock Art: Exploration, performance and practice
Sheffield and its surrounding area has one of the richest and most important records of Prehistoric rock art in Europe. Ranging from incised figurative art of the Upper Palaeolithic to more abstract geometric art of the Neolithic it represents a unique yet often unrealised source of inspiration.
This session explores the variety of Rock Art in the Sheffield region, looking at its development and some of the possible meanings suggested by archaeologists. The group will venture out in to the local area to explore examples of prehistoric rock art that remain in situ in the Sheffield area.
Using the review of existing cave art and through the direct exploration of ancient examples the group will then use authentic technologies to fashion their own piece of rock art. The session will help participants to understand the properties of local material and to develop the basic skills to fashion a rock art panel as inspired by prehistoric examples. Each participant will have a completed example by the end of the day session.
