Introduction to Pole Lathe Turning

A Course to introduce you to Green wood craft and using a Pole Lathe to make a Woodland Candlestick. Have you ever wanted to make something amazing but lacked the confidence to have a go? This is the course for you: turning green wood on a pole lathe, preparing timber to make useful materials for hand crafts, tool choice and maintenance, and safe tool use. Developing a hobby which connects you with the environment can be profoundly satisfying. Our Tutor is a skilled Woodsman who makes greenwood craft for a living and is keen to enthuse new converts to green woodworking
You will spend the day:
1. Considering different types of wood and what you can make from it.
2. Looking at the types of tools used in Greenwood Craft, and how to use them.
3. Cleaving greenwood logs into large billets ready for turning, using a Froe or Axe.
4. Using Cleaving breaks and shaving horses. What they are and how you can use them.
5. Creating a 'Woodland Candlestick' by turning using a Pole Lathe and simple hand tools.
Students will cleave harvested wood, and shape it with axes and drawknives to prepare billets for spindle turning . Using simple traditional tools, the materials can be transformed into a range of useful and decorative items.

All materials and tools are provided for you on the day. You will need to bring a packed lunch - drinks are provided! wear suitable clothes for working outdoors.
