The J G Graves Woodland Discovery Centre


Set in the extensive and beautiful Ecclesall woods, the Woodland Discovery Centre is the perfect indoor and outdoor facility for a spectrum of events and a visit to the woods.  Space is available to hire at the centre for:



The centre runs craft courses all through the year from cider making to wood work skills.  Public events in the autumn and spring celebrate Sheffield’s rich woodland heritage and demonstrates the unique facilities of the centre, as well as providing activities such as story telling, discovering nature and traditional uses of wood in the home and garden.

Coppicing and pollarding are traditional methods of woodland management, which have been used for generations.


Bronze Smelting & Casting. 9.30 – 4.00pm, 12/03/2016, £85.00


Looking at the evidence for the first use of metals. It reviews the archaeological evidence and considers the problems for those wishing to reconstruct the processes


Carving Explorations - sculptural wood carving. 9.30 – 4.00pm, 19/03/2016, £100


Bring your idea or work intuitively on the day and begin to discover the techniques to release the carver in you!




Introduction to Wood Carving for Kids (aged 8+). 10.00 – 3.00pm, 30/03/2016, £35.00


Learn to safely use a knife, drawknife and shave horse to create traditional wooden crafts.


Whittling & Knife/Chip Carving Skills. 9.30 – 4.00pm, 01 - 02/04/2016, £140.00


On this exciting new course, learn to use a number of tools safely and effectively to create stunning decorative woodcrafts.





Coracle making [1 day Master class]. 9.30 – 4.00pm, 09/04/2016, £95.00


The coracle, along with the log dugout, is among the earliest of waterborne vessels.


Walking Stick making. 9.30 – 4.00pm, 16/04/2016, £85.00


A one day class in the basic skills involved in making your own walking stick.


Introduction to Greenwood Craft [3 day course]. 9.30 – 4.00pm, 06 to 08-05-16, £225.00


A 3 day course to introduce you to Green wood craft, using a Pole Lathe, basic craft tools and making simple Rustic furniture.


Make your own 'Besome' Broom. 9.30 – 4.00pm, 15/05/2016, £85.00


Besom brooms are made from the twiggy growth of the birch tree, and so the craft was particularly strong in areas where birch coppices abounded.


Pyrography for Adults [the Art of Writing with Fire]. 10.00 – 3.00pm, 18/05/2016, £85.00


Would you like to have a go at a traditional folk art? Have you ever fancied burning designs into a natural surface such as wood or leather? This course is an introduction to anyone who is interested in the art of woodburning or pyrography.

What is Green Wood? Green Wood is freshly felled, still sappy wood. To work it requires a set of simple techniques based on an understanding of how wood reacts - both to the tools, and to the drying and shrinking process.

A Course to introduce you to Green wood craft and how to use a Pole Lathe.   Have you ever wanted to make something amazing but lacked the confidence to have a go?

Could you survive in the woods on your own! Learn bushcraft techniques such as shelter building, basic knots and lashing techniques, how to start a fire effectively, how to use a whittling knife to make traditional wooden pegs.

Learn the ancient art of spoon carving in greenwood. A one-day course with Dave Jackson, basic spoon carving is an excellent, relaxing opportunity to get away from it all and do something different for a day, in the peace and tranquillity of our Woodland Craft Area.

Basketry making is the weaving of unspun vegetable fibers, usually to form a container. Baskets making done from any wood, vine, leaf, or fiber that could be formed into a desirable shape.

Stand out this Halloween and bonfire night with your very own handmade lantern. This course will provide you with all the materials, tools and information to create your own willow lantern that you can use over and over again at festivals, lantern processions and Halloween!



Willow Garden Structures. 9.30 – 4.00pm, 05/11/2016, £97.00


Willow is an amazing plant. A cut stem can re-root and grow through just being pushed in the ground. It grows incredibly quickly, is tactile, flexible and a joy to work with.



Iron Smelting & Bloom Making.  9.30 – 4.00pm, 12/11/2016, £95.00


One day Course: Based at the Discovery Centre. The day will be spent learning about the use of iron and how to smelt it and produce a bloom, tutored by experts in their field.  



Hazel Hurdle Making. 9.30 – 4.00pm 19/11/2016, £100.00


Hurdles are traditional fence panels that have been used for a variety of different functions over the years, from animal enclosures to walls of houses.


Christmas Crafts Workshop for Adults. 9.30 – 4.00pm, 20/11/2016, £65.00


This course will provide you with all the materials, tools and information to create your own Christmas decorations and crafts.  


Reindeer Making Workshop. 9.30 – 4.00pm, 25/11/2016, £65.00


Get into the Christmas spirit with your very own, hand-made rustic Rudolph! This course will provide you with all the materials, tools and know-how and guide you through the process of making an eco-friendly, rustic, wooden reindeer full of character, which can sit proudly in your garden or home.


Frame Basket Making. 9.30 – 4.00pm, 26/11/2016, £85.00


Basket making is one of the oldest of all crafts. It pre-dates pottery and cloth weaving, and led to the invention of both. Each student will craft his or her own frame basket. All materials and tools are provided.
