Besom broom making

15th May 2016 -  9:30am – 4:00pm

Besom broom making: Besom brooms are made from the twiggy growth of the birch tree, and so the craft was particularly strong in areas where birch coppices abounded.

Besom broom making begins making the broom head by gathering together ready prepared birch twigs.

The twigs are arranged by rolling them to and fro on a bench. Larger twigs form the centre of the brush with shorter ones around the outside. The handle is made from a coppiced pole approx 2" in diameter. You will also take away a'woodsman's grip', a tool for clamping the head if you want to attempt to make these at home..

After making your 'broom', there will be time available to practice 'Greenwood Whittling', making your own spatula, in cleft timber.
