Against The Grain'  - expressive wood carving on a large peace of wood , with sculptor Simon Kent.

Learn the art of creative wood sculpture on large pieces of timber, using the basic tools of the sculpture, chisels, mallets etc.


Simon has always been interested in art, and has a passion for sculpture in particular. For many years he has explored, and experimented with different materials including, paint, clay, concrete, metal, aerated blocks, stone and wood. his work is stimulated by lots of things, from primitive art to everyday emotional, and visual experience.


For the last few years he has been working mainly in wood, doing large abstract and figurative sculptures. His work has been featured in local and national newspapers, art magazines, BBC Radio, and has been on TV several times. His  exhibitions have been visited on two occasions by HRH The Prince of Wales, at Sheffield Botanical Gardens and Welbeck. “To him, making marks is the most important. Idea and title are secondary. The strongest marks are the ones he don’t remember; the subconscious.”


You should expect to hopefully, complete, and take home a freeform  [profile] sculpture in a slab of Beech or Oak.

Refundable up to two weeks prior to course (minus £30 admin fee) No refunds for cancellations within two weeks of course.


All materials and tools are provided for you on the day. You will need to bring a packed lunch - drinks are provided! wear suitable clothes for working outdoors.
